Light Leaks
Light leaks are known as failure in photography. When a photographer exposes film, they do so carefully though the camera, but if light leaks in any other form it can mean the end for that roll. I found myself in that unfortunate position. I had accidentally exposed film and assumed the worst but didn’t give up. I developed the roll and to my pleasure, something completely unintended had risen from this seemingly scrapped roll. Here are my light leaks.
The Night
This work is about the fringes of a place that has no beginning or end, but has always just been. Most nights I drive out into this desolate suburban wasteland which I call my hometown and wander through the empty places of my past which have always held intrigue. This eerie collection of work presents the only light within my seemingly inescapable small town which has fallen into the complete darkness of the night.
Drawing influences from Robert Adams’ Summer Nights Walking, I have taken it upon myself to document the edges of my town in the nighttime atmosphere. The long exposures laid out before you paint a reality that’s devoid of life. I thought all I needed was a tripod and shutter release to turn this mysterious night-scape into a body of work. What I discovered was that it required something greater, it was a culmination of my experiences and emotions with this place. My camera acted as force momentarily repelling the darkness and revealing the night for what it truly is: the suppression of light. My goal is to capture and show the bleak light of my hometown through my work.
